Are some languages easier for Spanish people?

Learning a new language is always going to involve numerous advantages, it might be finding a job, living in another country or simply gaining new knowledge. With that in mind, many people often ask themselves: which languages are easiest for someone who speaks Spanish? At Glorick, we would like to answer that question in the following article.

What makes a language easier to learn?

When it comes to learning a language, there are many factors that we should bear in mind, given that, in order to speak fluently we must learn the phonetics, all the grammatical aspects and syntax of that language.

Despite there not being one single factor that determines whether one language is easier to learn than another, it’s important to point out that some languages might be simpler to learn due to their similarity and closeness with our mother tongue. On the other hand, languages that are very different to Spanish, for example those that don’t come from Latin languages, can be difficult ones to learn.

Easier languages to learn for a Spanish person

In the following article, we’ll mention some of the easiest languages to learn for a person who has a command of Spanish.

Portuguese

The first language that we would like to mention in this article as a language that’s easier to learn for a Spanish person, is Portuguese. As we mentioned in our previous article, about why you should study Spanish and Portuguese, there are many reasons why you should study Portuguese.

One of the stand-out reasons is that both Portuguese and Spanish are Romance languages that come from Latin. As a result of that, they share vocabulary, some grammar structures and we could even say that they have similar characteristics in terms of pronunciation.

French

Despite this language’s pronunciation sometimes being complicates given its many characteristics, the second language that we would like to highlight is French. It’s important to mention as well that learning French vocabulary can be a much easier task given that there are many similar words in both languages.

Much like Portuguese, French vocabulary comes from Latin which makes learning it easier for people who already have a command of Spanish.

Italian

The third easiest language to learn is Italian. Much like Portuguese, Italian is another Romance language and shares a lot of similar lexicon with Spanish given that there are many words that, as well as being similar, mean exactly the same thing. It’s important to mention that despite there being some differences with Spanish, Italian pronunciation is quite simple.

As well as what we’ve already mentioned, it’s important to point out that many words that we use in Spanish are Italian in origin which makes learning the vocabulary quite a simple task.

Catalan

As with Portuguese and Italian, Catalan is another language that shares many similarities with Spanish, in both a written and oral sense.

Despite being a language that also comes from Latin, it also has a lot of historical influences that can present a few differences, above all in terms of pronunciation and spelling.

Romanian

The last language that we would like to include and mention in this article might be the most surprising given that many people don’t know that Romanian is also a Romance language widely spoken in the European Union.

It’s also considered an easy language to learn for people who have a command of Spanish given that Romanian is a very similar language to Latin, it has maintained a large part of its grammatical structure and vocabulary from its mother language.
