Types of work visas in Portugal


One of the most important pieces of information that you need to know in order to start your professional career in Portugal is what type of work visa you need in order to work in the country.


Members of the European Union


All the people who are citizens of the European Union will require neither visas nor work permits. Despite this, you will need to get the Certificado de Registro, in other words a residence certificate, if you’re thinking of working in Portugal for longer than 3 months.


Non-European citizens


In the event that someone wants to work in Portugal but is not a European Union resident, they will need a work permit before they start working in the country.


Specifically, you’ll have to get a work permit from the Portuguese labour authorities. It’s important to mention that Portugal only usually offers this type of permit to people that have a job offer of longer than 3 months.


Furthermore, once you get your work permit, you should get a Portuguese work-visa and residence permit.

A working day in Portugal: how many hours do people work and how much holiday do you get per year?


Another relevant piece of information that we think you should know is about the working day and what the conditions are. It’s important to mention that Portugal’s labour laws determine a maximum working day of 8 hours, or 40 hours per week.


Despite determining some maximum limits, it’s important to also mention that the same labour laws take into account different aspects with the aim of making working time, and therefore the working day, more flexible.


Holidays are usually an important topic for a lot of people. Specifically, Portugal establishes that after a year working in a company, you will receive 22 holidays per year as a right. Furthermore, you should know that it’s considered an inalienable right that cannot be ceded in exchange for a monetary substitute.
