Nowadays, we have a lot of content at our fingertips to learn a new language. Not only can we learn languages through books and classes, we have a lot of audiovisual content available such as series or movies that can boost our learning.

Portuguese is a language that’s very present in the world of cinema and that’s why, it’s recommended to know some of the best movies for learning and improving your Portuguese level.


Aquarius


The first movie that we would like to mention in this article is “Aquarius”, it is, without doubt, one of the best movies to watch for improving your Portuguese level.


We think it’s one of the best movies in Portuguese that you can watch because the story it tells is simple and easy to understand. Furthermore, thanks to the actors’ performances, it will be even easier to understand the plot to this movie.


Specifically, “Aquarius” tells the story of Clara, a retired music-critic who decides to spend the rest of her life in her apartment located in Recife, Brazil. The conflict in the movie arises when Clara is pressured to sell her apartment in order to build you a new, modern building.


Cidade de Deus


Another one of the biggest and unmissable movies is “Cidade de Deus”, also known as City of God in English. Released in 2002, it has since become one of the biggest Brazilian movies of all time.


Cidade de Deus tells a story based on real events and was written by Paulo Lins. Specifically, the movie tells the story of a group of youngsters who live in a crime-filled area of Rio de Janeiro.


Despite the emotions of the movie and the powerful scenes it contains, we think it’s a good movie to improve and widen your Portuguese vocabulary, given that it’s characterised by simple dialogues that are easy to understand.


Tropa de Elite


Another one of the movies that we would like to mention is “Tropa de Elite”, also known as Elite Squad in English, it came out in 2008 and it has become one of the most successful movies in Brazil.


If you like action movies and you would like to perfect your Portuguese level as well, then “Tropa de Elite '' is one of the best movies you can watch given that it tells the story of a military-intelligence team. This team is better known as Elite Squad and it tried to end the main problems found in the country such as narco-trafficking in poorer areas.


Capitães de Abril


“Capitães de Abril '', also known as April Captains in English is another one of the movies that we would like to mention given that it tells the story of the military coup that managed to overthrow the facist government in 1974. We think that in order to learn a language it’s necessary to also learn about the history and the culture of the place, that’s why, we recommend without hesitation Capitães de Abril.


Central do Brasil


The last movie that we would like to mention in this article is “Central do Brasil”, also known as Central Station in English. It won the Golden Globe for best foreign movie and is based on the story of Walter Salles.


Despite being a classic movie, it is without doubt a great story to continue perfecting the language given that it’s a fine example of how to speak Portuguese and the wide range of vocabulary that the language offers.


“Central do Brasil” tells the story of Dora, a retired teacher, and Josué, a young boy who little by little lost his mother and finds himself looking for his father. Everything changes in this movie when Dora and Josué find each other and realise how important they are to each other.
