Recently we talked about the 5 best movies for learning Portuguese, and just as we mentioned in that article, movies and tv series have become one of the best learning tools in recent times.

At Glorick, we understand the numerous advantages that audiovisual resources offer in the process of learning a language and that’s why we would like to also mention what the best movies for learning Spanish are.

The 5 best movies for learning Spanish

As we were saying, learning Spanish by watching movies has a lot of advantages, given that they can improve and widen vocabulary via a learning process that is easier and more fun. In the following article we’ll talk about the best 5 movies you can watch in order to continue learning.

Tres metros sobre el cielo

If you’ve started to study Spanish recently and therefore have a lower level, we recommend that you start with simpler movies with vocabulary that’s easier to understand and follow.

Specifically, we recommend starting with movies such as “Tres metros sobre el cielo”, or Three Steps from Heaven in English, that also has a second part that you can practise with even more. We would say that “Tres metros sobre el cielo” and “Tengo ganas de ti”, or I Want You in English, are great movies to start off with, given that they are quick, fun and, above all, easy to follow both in the narration and the vocabulary that’s used.

La Comunidad

If you think that you have a higher level of Spanish then we would recommend “La Comunidad”, or Common Wealth in English, a comedy directed by Álex de la Iglesia. Even though it’s a movie from 2000, and therefore a little dated, La comunidad is a good option to put into practice everything that you’ve learned about reasoning and how to make an accurate description.

As we’ve already mentioned, this movie is perfect to learn how to debate, know how to appropriately express your opinions and hypothesise, given that the story revolves around a group of killer neighbours.

El Laberinto del Fauno

If you have an intermediate level of Spanish and have already seen La Comunidad, we recommend that you follow it up with “El Laberinto del Fauno”, or Pan’s Labyrinth in English. This movie will not only allow you to learn new vocabulary and widen your knowledge of the language, but it will also help you to practise past and present verb-tenses.

El Laberinto del Fauno was written, produced and directed by Guillermo del Toro in 2006, its story is told through the eyes of Ofelia, an 11 year old girl who travels with her mother to a town in the north of Spain. From that moment on we see the reality of this girl and how she uses fantasy to escape it.

Diarios de Motocicleta

The next unmissable movie on the list is “Diarios de Motocicleta”, or The Motorcycle Diaries in English. This movie, despite having more complex vocabulary in some parts, is considered perfect for everyone regardless of the level that you might have. Furthermore, not only will you be able to learn new vocabulary about everyday situations, you’ll also be able to enjoy one of the best places in South America.

Diarios de Motocicleta is a movie based on the diaries of Che Guevara that tell the story of a long motorcycle trip through South America. That’s why you’ll be able to learn whilst enjoying the amazing landscapes.

Mar adentro

“Mar adentro”, or The Sea Inside in English, is another unmissable movie if you have a more advanced level of Spanish, given that it can help you to perfect your Spanish. It was directed by Alejandro Amenábar in 2004 and tells a very interesting story based on real events. Specifically, it tells the story of Ramón Sampedro, a man who ends up paralised after an accident and has to fight from his bed for the right to a dignified death.

We would say that in order to watch this movie you should have a more advanced level in the language, not only because of the plot of the movie, but also because it uses a lot of verb tenses and more dense and complex vocabulary.

La Isla Mínima

If you have a high level of Spanish you should also be aware of some movies that are perfect to continue learning and improve even more. Specifically, we recommend “La Isla Mínima”, or Marshland in English.

A movie that, as well as hooking you with its story and storytelling, will help you to widen your knowledge of Spanish through scenes that might use more complex vocabulary, structures and other elements that will help you to perfect your Spanish.
