Discipline vs motivation: which one leads to success?

As we return from summer vacation and start a new school year, the question I ask my readers is: are you disciplined and motivated enough to achieve your goals? Oops! Don't know the difference between discipline and motivation? Read this post now to find out the real meaning of these words.

If we look up the word motivation in the dictionary, we will find the following definition: “act or effect of motivating or motivating oneself, of stimulating or stimulating oneself”, we realize that it is the same as stimulus and incentive. Another definition we find is: “set of reasons that lead a person or group of people to act in a certain way”.

From this we can understand that motivation is like a motive that leads an individual to action. That motivation is a force that triggers and directs behaviour from a momentary feeling or thought. In this way, motivation is an energy that triggers and directs human behaviour.

However, because it is an impulse, it has a temporary effect. In other words, there is no consistency. No one is motivated every day, 100% of their time!

On the other hand, if we do the same exercise and look up the word discipline in the dictionary, we will find, among other definitions, the following explanation: “obedience to a set of explicit or implicit rules”.

Discipline is about permanence, rules and constancy – regardless of mood, feelings and context. After all, discipline refers to the fulfilment of each person's specific responsibilities.

Discipline vs motivation: which one leads to success?

Right, assuming that success is a set of small victories, conquered daily, surely the answer is that discipline must be our main ally. After all, motivation is just a feeling. Discipline, on the other hand, is the commitment you have with yourself, or cause, to always move forward, even with all the adversities that may arise.

How to have more discipline to study, for example?

Reconciling the daily routine of work and family is already a task that seems almost impossible. Here at Glorick we know that in the midst of all this, staying motivated with your studies is quite challenging. So with that in mind, I end this post today with some brief tips on how to have more discipline to study:

  • Remember daily what motivated you to start this new challenge;

  • Know that troubled days are fleeting. Don't let them be obstacles to your dreams;

  • Make a commitment to the most important person in your life: you. For there is no better feeling than to conclude something that we have set out to do;

  • Don't let other people interfere with your goal. Discipline is also swimming against the current;

  • Put class and/or study times on your agenda and take it with the same seriousness as you take an important meeting. After all, without routine there is no discipline;

  • Create strategies to make your study routine more enjoyable, we even have a post here on the blog talking about it, click here to read it;

  • Keep in mind that being disciplined takes time. Therefore, organize yourself in the best possible way to put the discipline into practice;

  • Start enjoying the process and celebrate small learning progress.

Having discipline is knowing how to build your castle, stone by stone – and that's amazing!
